Ciulla Girolamo

Girolamo Ciulla was born in Caltanissetta, Sicily, in 1952. He died in Pietrasanta on Decembre 8, 2023.

In 1970, when he was only seventeen years old, Ciulla took part in the 7th contemporary art festival in his hometown.
In 1987 the artist began his participation in national exhibitions and started a long and important collaboration with Tiziano Forni; founder and soul of the Forni Gallery, Bologna.
Collaboration which made possible for Ciulla to participate in several sculpture exhibitions and renowned national and international art fairs as: Artefiera in Bologna and MiArt-Fiera Internazionale of Modern and Contemporary art of Milan.
The following year in 1988, Ciulla was invited to the “Versiliana” of Marina di Pietrasanta and decided to move to Pietrasanta to work from the marble quarry, thus in closer contact to the laboratories in the area.

Also his presence in internatinal exhibtions has been noted in: Musée des Beaux-Arts di Bemay, in Normandy (1990), at Museum der Skulpturenmodelle di Grenzach-Wylhen in Baden Wurttenberg (1992), at Contemporary Art Center of Schalkwyk at Utrecht (1998), at Boulevard des Sculptures 2002 dinKijkduin, seaside resort near to Den Haag (2002), at Triptyque, exhibition to Abbaye du Ronceray at Angers (2004), at the Biennale of Contemporary Art in Busan, the second metropolitan city of South Korea (2006).
Ciulla has explored other areas outside the exhibition-context, venturing into the monumental sculpture, where he has completed works for the Church of S. Pietro in Caltanissetta (2002) and for the Castagnola’s square, “The Crocodiles”, province of Massa.
In recent years Ciulla holds exhibitions of particular importance in Pietrasanta, in Piazza Duomo and in the Church of St. Augustine, curated by Beatrice Buscaroli (spring 2006) and in London at the Albemarie Gallery (spring 2007).
Additionally, he was invited to participate at three important exhibitions curated by Marilena Pasquali: Morandi e la natura morta oggi in Italia (Francavilla al Mare, Museo Michetti, july-august 2007), Nuova Biennale del Muro Dipinto (Dozza, Bologna, september-october 2007), L'alibi dell'oggetto. Morandi e gli sviluppi della natura morta in Italia (Lucca, Fondazione Carlo e Licia Ragghianti, 2007).
In 2010 he participates to Biennale Scultura Internazionale in Racconigi curated by Luciano Caramel and in 2011 to Biennale Progetto Scultura in Rimini, curated by Beatrice Buscaroli and to the 54th edition of the Venice Biennale, Padiglione Italia, Regione Sicilia. In 2014 he participates to the exhibition “Artisti di Sicilia. Da Pirandello a Iudice”, Ex Tonnara dei Florio, Favignana (TP).
On the occasion of Expo Milano 2015, 4 sculptures titled Aurighe are exhibited inside Oscar Farinetti's Eataly pavilion during the exhibition "I Tesori d'Italia" curated by Vittorio Sgarbi. In the same year he held the solo show "Girolamo Ciulla // The builder of temples", at the Circolo del Fico in Pietrasanta. In 2016, under the curatorship of Pietro Marani, he exhibited a series of works dedicated to the myth of Apuleius and the golden donkey at Forte dei Marmi, at Villa Bertelli and held the personal exhibition "Le ali di San Giorgio" curated by Vittorio Sgarbi at Etra Studio in Florence. In 2017 he exhibited with Giorgio Tonelli at Galleria Forni with the exhibition titled "Declinazioni", curated by Beatrice Buscaroli. Of great importance is the exhibition “Girolamo Ciulla. Dimore del Mito "curated by Beatrice Buscaroli held in 2018 in Matera as part of" The Great Exhibitions in the Sassi ".
